God's most consistent presence and work is in the small, often hidden, ordinary places of life.
Bringing the Incarnation of Christ to a young, unknown, or influential woman in an unimportant town to be hidden from public view for 30 years, to revealing himself to His friends in the breaking of the bread, God is not limited to great spectacles. Of course He is capable of those and some do get the call to put down their nets, leave their mothers and fathers, and live an outwardly radically different life. Most often, however, God radically changes our hearts by elevating the ordinary.
God whispers to us in the typical moments of our daily life.
It's exciting to think of grand callings and radically changed lives, however, God in His wisdom knew that we could sometimes even better exist with Him and grow in holiness through our daily lives rather than feeling like we needed to pause our daily calling to be with Him - and then pause our time with Him to go back to life.
God exists as a communion of persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He himself is communion. Being that we are made in His image and likeness, we are also meant to live in communion...both with Him and with each other.
God is not limited to big shows of power. After the greatest calling on a human that ever was, the Incarnation, Mary said yes, and then went back to her ordinary life. Everything had changed, and yet she still went to draw water, sweep the floor, and make dinner. The ordinary moments of her life is where God came to her…where he changed everything. The same is probably true for you. Yes, God shows up big-ly when you’re at a retreat or a conference where the music is particularly moving, or when you see the beauty of His creation in a profound way, but never forget that God’s original design for us was to walk with him in the cool of the day like Adam before the fall. His plan was to just exist with us, walk with us, be part of daily life with us. He is in our common and ordinary moments. It’s a great act of faith to see Him there and allow those times to move us just as much as the extraordinary ones.
Where can you encounter Our Lord In the ordinary moments of your life today?
